Thomas Foods International, a family-owned company, has a plan of investing hundred million dollars to construct a new state-of-the-art abattoir at the prime location of Murray Bridge. Please note that its previous plant faced destruction by fire 18 months ago.

The plan

The plan covers building a new facility at the Greenfield site, a location that is 10km away from the town center. Furthermore, initially, it will create 400 jobs before reaching to 2000 employees after it is completely operational.

CEO Darren Thomas also said that this exercise of rebuilding is the largest investment made by the company in 30-years. Furthermore, it is on an unprecedented scale in the industry for several years. It is also a re-affirmation of the commitment made on day one. The plan is to build the most advanced processing facility catering to multi-species that is the best in Australia.

This facility will be world-class and also adapt to the latest technological advancements. There will be a focus on environmental sustainability, efficiency, animal welfare and safety aspects at the workplace. The plant will come up in stages and the facilities of beef processing will be completed foremost.

The final stages

In the final stages, there will be substantial expansion and a great footprint in comparison to the previous Murray Bridge site. Thomas Foods did not announce a commencement date for this construction, but the production can begin by Nov 2020.

David McKay, Chief Operating Officer, Thomas Foods International, stated that the company worked in close coordination with the team of process engineers of international standing for producing an outstanding design that is environmentally sustainable. Furthermore, this will be a lifetime opportunity for building a spanking new flagship facility, to service global operations for several decades. This will also deliver the top standards in beef as well as lamb processing.

There was a fire accident that ripped through the Murray Bridge Abattoir on Jan 3, 2018. It caused heavy damage worth many million dollars.

From the time of the blaze, the company created many jobs and invested millions in other facilities located at Tamworth in New South Wales and Lobethal in the Adelaide Hills.
